Firstly we give you an overview of the material and construction of the mooring rope:
mooring rope material: ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene rope, polypropylene rope, polyester rope, nylon rope, aramid rope and other fibre ropes.
Structure of mooring rope: mainly 3-stranded rope, 6-stranded rope, 8-stranded rope, 12-stranded rope, traction rope, double-braided rope, etc.
Use and operation of the mooring rope:
Before each use of the mooring rope: the marking label, insertion of braided ring eyes. The rope body should carefully check for cuts, broken strands, broken wires, kinks and other damaged parts. If there are no anomalies or defects, then it can use normally.
When unrolling the mooring rope: the mooring rope should release from the end of the rope inside the roll. And the mooring rope should released in anti-clockwise direction. If the mooring rope unrolled in the clockwise direction, kinking will occur. If a kink occurs, the mooring rope should return to the reel. And the mooring rope should turn over, pill out from the centre. A better method is to unroll the mooring rope on a turntable, where the mooring rope can pulled out from the outer rope end.
Unfolding the mooring rope from the rope spool: If a rope spool used to unfold the mooring rope, the rope spool itself should rotate freely. This can easily achieve by passing a tube through the centre of the spool. However, not permit to unroll the mooring rope by placing the rope spool vertically.
Unfolding the mooring rope from the pulley assembly:The ratio of the diameter d of the mooring rope spreading from the pulley device should be more than 5. But for some high-performance fibre ropes the D/d value can be as high as 20. For mooring ropes it recommend that the diameter of the pulley groove is 10-15% larger than the diameter of the cable. If the mooring rope contacts the sheave groove with a radius of 1500, the mooring rope can optimally stressed. The height of the pulley flange should be at least 1.5 times the diameter of the mooring rope to prevent the mooring rope from running out of the pulley. In addition, the sheave should inspect frequently. Also should maintain the bearings regularly to ensure smooth rotation of the sheave.
Knotting of mooring ropes: Knotting of mooring ropes to form eyelets or shortening of mooring ropes by knotting should avoid. As knotting can weaken the strength of mooring ropes by up to 50 per cent.
Knotting or ‘twisting’ of the mooring rope:
Excessive rotation can cause kinks in mooring ropes. Which normally found in twisted ropes, and in braided ropes, which have interlocking strands that prevent the strands from coming apart. Braided and braided twisted ropes do not produce ‘twisted’ kinks because the interlocking strands prevent the strands from coming apart.
In case of over-rotation of the mooring rope, the kinks should eliminated by reversing the rotation. While the mooring rope is in a relaxed state. Once form a ‘twist’, the mooring rope will have a reduced breaking strength . Even when the ‘twist’ undone, and the loss of strength in the mooring rope as high as 30%. Therefore, no kinks allowing to form in the mooring rope. And if create a kink, should open the kink from the mooring rope end. This recommendation applies to twisted ropes as well as braided ropes.
Kinks are particularly serious in twisted ropes and can lead to serious damage to the mooring rope. Avoid removing kinks by pulling on the mooring rope to apply force. This will cause the strands to twist. And the mooring rope will lose approximately 15% of its strength.
If the mooring rope using in a ‘twist’, the mooring rope will lose approximately 1/3 of its strength in this position. If cyclic loading continues, the ‘twist’ will continue to extend. And this defect will reduce the strength of the mooring rope.
Storage and maintenance of mooring rope:
Due to limitations on cable use due to environmental conditions or hazardous operations. The following should consider when using mooring rope for special operations:
- Chemical resistance of the material selected
- Limitations due to temperature
- Sensitivity to cutting and abrasion
- Degradation of ultraviolet radiation
- The environment to which it will subjected for a long period of time
The mooring rope should store in a place far away from heat source (fire source or electric welding). Without direct sunlight, ventilated and dry, without corrosive chemicals.
mooring rope storage period of more than one year, should test before use.
After use in acid and alkali occasions, mooring rope should rinsed clean with cool water or cleaning agent. And then dried and stored. Moist mooring rope should place in a well-ventilated environment, and then stored and used with priority after natural air-drying. To avoid moisture and mould, and to reduce the strength of mooring rope. Mooring rope should place on a special shelf for proper storage after use, to prevent rodent bites.
